About Cashew Nuts Raw Organic
Native to South America, the cashew tree was introduced to India by the Portuguese, and is now grown in many other tropical parts of the world. The cashew tree produces cashew apples, small red-yellow false fruit with a cashew nut dangling off the base (the true fruit of the cashew tree is a much smaller drupe that acts as a receptacle for the cashew nut.) Although the cashew seed is called a nut, it’s not a true nut—true nuts come from fruits with a single seed and a hard shell that does not split open upon reaching maturity. As the cashew nut is difficult to extract from its hard shell, and the shell contains powerful irritant substances, the nut is commonly sold shelled.
Our cashew nuts come from Tanzania. They are entirely harvested and processed there. Cracking and sorting the cashews in Tanzania is not only better for the environment, but also contributes to the employment of local Tanzanians. The cashew nuts in-shell are collected and transported to the local factory. There, the shell is removed with heat and the nuts sorted based on their size. All the nuts are sorted manually and that is pretty unique.
Cashews are high in calories (100 g – 553 calories) so be mindful when you open up the jar with them! Although they bring plenty of calories they are rich in “heart-friendly” mono-unsaturated fatty acids, high in protein and abundant source of essential minerals (manganese, potassium, copper, iron, magnesium, zinc and selenium). Cashew nuts are also an excellent source for antioxidants. Eating 18 cashew nuts a day already provides you with the recommended daily consumption of antioxidants.
